Post-Lab Worksheet:

Salt and Water Boiling

  1. Using MS Excel, graph Boiling Temperature (degrees C) vs. Salt Concentration (grams of salt/ml of H2O) for your trials.

  2. Next graph Boiling Temperature vs. Solution Mass% of Salt for your trials.

  3. Do the two graphs look the same? Why or why not? Explain your reasoning.

  4. Calculate the uncertainty in the solution concentrations and solution mass percents. Use the data in Trial#3 for both calculations.

  5. Briefly discuss your experimental results. How does the boiling point change as salt concentration increased? What amount of salt added to the water showed the greatest amount of change? Be sure to include the maximum and minimum boiling points recorded and at which amounts of salt added somewhere in this discussion.

  6. Also include some discussion of how much the experimental uncertainty effected your results, using calculated uncertainties above and the uncertainty in the temperature reading.
